Groupon founder Andrew Mason releases soft-rock motivation album

Former Groupon CEO Andrew Mason wasn’t kidding when he said he was working on an album: It’s now on iTunes, Spotify and other digital outlets.

Mason, who was fired earlier this year from the company he founded, released his “motivational business music” album “Hardly Workin’” on Tuesday.

The album features seven songs intended to help “executives, mid-level management, and front-line employees,” the 32-year-old tech entrepreneur says in a blog post.

“This album pulls some of the most important learnings from my years at the helm of one of the fastest growing businesses in history, and packages them as music,” Mason said.

The album, which was announced last month, was produced by Grammy-nominated producer Don Gehman, who has worked with John Mellencamp, Hootie and the Blowfish, and R.E.M.

“Don assembled an enormously talented group of musicians, and created a magical environment where the songs came together with comfort and ease,” Mason said. “I couldn’t have pulled this off without his wisdom and guidance.”

Mason, who is reportedly worth $200 million, didn’t say who paid to produce the album, though he told the Wall Street Journal that it was an independent production.

In his blog, Mason also included a few examples of how managers can use the album to motivate their staff.

“Try ending your next all-hands meeting with ‘It’s Up to Us,’ for example,” he said. “Or, having trouble communicating with a low-per/hi-po [low performing, high potential] employee? A ‘Thinkin’ of You’ note attached to a flash drive preloaded with ‘My Door is Always Open’ might be the catalyst you need for that transformational breakthrough.”

The album can be streamed from Spotify or purchased from iTunes for $9.99 or Google Play for $6.93.
