Motorola says Moto X phone will be customizable, assembled in U.S.

If the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One were the top smartphones of the first half of the year, then the Motorola Moto X is expected to be the star of the second half.

Motorola, a division of Google, offered new details about the device in a full-page ad placed in several national newspapers today. Most of the buzz surrounds the line that the Moto X will be “the first smartphone you can design yourself.” It’s unclear if that means aesthetic customizations, hardware options or both.

The ad affirmed that the phone would be assembled in Texas (though many individual components will be made overseas).

Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside said in May that the phone would be released before October. He also said the smartphone was truly smart, meaning, for example, that it would launch the camera app automatically when it determined the user was likely to take a picture next.

The ad features Motorola’s redesigned logo, featuring an “M” with a colorful circle of Google-like colors surrounding it. Google acquired Motorola Mobility last May.
