3Net creating 3D production and distribution studio

The main problem with owning a network that specializes in 3D is that there isn’t a ton of 3D programming around to fill the schedule.

With that in mind, 3Net -- the 3D cable channel owned by Sony, Discovery and IMAX -- have created an in-house production company to make original 3D content.

“With the industry now struggling to keep pace with the rapidly accelerating consumer demand for 3D programming across multiple platforms...the formation of a world-class production studio to help fill both the 3D and ultra-high-definition content voids became a logical next step in our evolution as a global player in the entertainment arena,” said Tom Cosgrove, president of 3Net.

A slate of projects is to be announced in the coming weeks.

Launched in 2011, 3Net currently carries a mix of nature and adventure programming. Shows include “Safari Park Adventure” and “Forgotten Planet.” The latter looks at “eerie locations that once hummed with activity and now are desolate” This week’s episode, no joke, is about Detroit. The channel also carries cage fights in 3D.

Programming from other channels owned by Discovery such as Animal Planet’s “Puppy Bowl” are available in 3D on 3Net. No word on whether TLC’s “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” will have a 3D version anytime soon.

While Hollywood movie studios have embraced 3D for the big screen, the format has not yet taken hold on the small screen. Many of the big distributors incuding Time Warner Cable and Comcast Corp. do not yet carry 3Net. It is available on DirecTV.
