YouTube launches new mobile app for Apple’s iPhone

Share

Google Inc.’s YouTube has released a new mobile app for the iPhone and iPod touch that boosts new search and video sharing features -- and supports advertising.

The new stand-alone YouTube application unveiled Tuesday morning allows users to view the channels they subscribe to on the site, find new videos via search and share their discoveries on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ social networks.

Perhaps the biggest change for users is that the new YouTube app will, for the first time, support advertising. The Google division’s original 2007 agreement with Apple prohibited ads because the YouTube app came pre-installed on the iPhone. That five-year contract ended this year.

Displaying advertising will unlock thousands of music videos, which show ad messages. The business decision also allows YouTube to more effectively capitalize on the mobile platform that accounts for 1 billiion views a day and makes up 25% of total video views.

YouTube’s announcement comes one day before Apple is expected to announce a new version of its operating system (and phone).
