One Direction’s new ‘Steal My Girl’ video: 5 things to love

One Direction has premiered the music video for its latest single, “Steal My Girl,” and there sure is a lot to see in the five-minute-plus clip.

Here are five moments from the feel-good video that stay with you, for better or worse.

Hello, Danny DeVito: The video opens with the cuties on set in the middle of the desert, awaiting the director of their music video. One Direction makes it known that the director is “the greatest star of his generation.” That’s when we see Danny DeVito roll up in an old convertible. He lays out his vision, declaring the band is here in the name of art to bring life to the desert. So destroy those inhibitions, boys, DeVito explains, and begin to create. (P.S. DeVito loves himself a juicy apple.)

Voila! And the new names are: Jumping right into his role, Danny DeVito gives each member a different label. When he does, the screen freezes, turns to black and white and -- bam! -- each boy gets a new identity. Harry Styles is love (aww), Niall Horan is light (totes), Liam Payne is power (ooh), Louis Tomlinson is danger (rawr) and Zayn Malik is mystery (ahh).

No way that’s in the desert: After each boy gets a novel persona, suddenly anything and everything artistic (?) appears in the desert. We’re taking sumo wrestlers, whom Zayn finds himself sandwiched between. Marching-band members whom Liam gets down with. A chimpanzee that holds hands with Louis. People in tribal garb who dance with Niall. And ballerinas who envelop Harry. Everyone seems to be having a great time, even DeVito.

PETA cares: In addition to the cornucopia of human beings in the desert, there are also wild and exotic animals. When PETA got a glimpse, the animal-rights organization wrote an open letter to the boy band expressing concern for the chimpanzee, lion and other animals featured in the clip. The production company that provided the animals, Fulwell 73, assured E! News in a statement that proper precautions had been taken. And that proper precautions have always been taken. So that’s that.

Did you hear those lyrics? This song is super-cute. It’s about a guy who’s with a girl who everyone wants. She’s got kisses like cream, a walk so mean and, boy, does she look good in jeans -- yes, those are the lyrics. And she belongs to this one lucky dude, so stop trying to take her heart away, people! But the video, well, that’s another story.
