First look at ‘Supergirl’s’ Guardian

Share

Watch out Supergirl, National City is getting a new vigilante. James Olsen is going to be Guardian, complete with mask and shield.

Guardian made his comic book debut in 1942 in DC’s “Star-Spangled Comics” No. 7. Created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon — the creators of Marvel’s Captain America — their Guardian carried an indestructible shield but had no actual superpowers on his own.

The original Guardian’s secret identity was Jim Harper, a police officer who became a vigilante to go after criminals that escaped legal prosecution. Aspects of Guardian’s story have changed over the years, and other characters have donned the mask and shield, including Mal Duncan, who appeared in the animated “Young Justice” TV series.

According to “Supergirl” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, Olsen (played by Mehcad Brooks) in Season 2 is going to “realize that being a photographer is not enough for him, so he’s going to go on a pretty exciting career trajectory. ... James is going to decide that he can no longer sit back and be a sidekick, so he’s going to decide to become a vigilante.”
