Image title “MANTIS ASSASSIN” Painting by Peter Chan. Peter: “Inspired by the elegant forms of the praying mantis’ exoskeleton, this graceful but deadly dancer was sent on a mission to seduce and assassinate an enemy king. Weapons concealed beneath her striking formal costume are employed to provide a most exciting climax to her performance.”
Concept art comes to life through Design Studio Press
A group of concept designers, led by Scott Robertson, launched Design Studio Press to bring to light their storyboarding and industrial-design efforts -- as well as their off-the-clock artwork. The big dilemma, says Robertson, is that many of these guys have been out working for 10 years and they have no personal artwork to show for it. About 90% of the time, studios will never release the rights to the artwork to be shown by the original artists. Its very, very common. Studios own everything. The group has published nearly two dozen titles, including “Concept Design: 1,” “The Skillfull Huntsman” and “Luminair.” (Liz O. Baylen / Los Angeles Times)
