Jim Carrey: Life in Pictures

No laughing matter

Growing up, Jim Carrey’s life was nothing to laugh about. “I had a sick mom, man,” he told “60 Minutes.” It was his mother’s illness, in fact, that motivated Carrey to attempt comedy. “I wanted to make her feel better. I’d bounce off the walls and throw myself down the stairs to make her feel better.” A comedian was born. (Brad Barket / Getty Images)

Anger

Carrey’s entire family worked as security guards and janitors to make ends meet. The actor told “60 Minutes” that the poverty left him furious: “I was angry at the world for doing that to my father. I wanted to bash somebody’s head in, basically.” (Gary He / AP)

Stand-up guy

Carrey found his niche performing stand-up comedy. He got his start in Toronto, then took a leap of faith and moved to L.A., where he performed at the Comedy Store. Rodney Dangerfield caught his act and saw something special in the young comic. Dangerfield invited Carrey to open for him on tour. (AFP)

On the small screen

Carrey found work in film and TV. (He once played a gang member on “Happy Days.”) In the early ‘90s, he burst into America’s living rooms on the irreverent sketch comedy show “In Living Color.” (Twentieth Century Fox)

Breakout role

“Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” made Carrey a star and spawned an entire generation of preteen imitators. The actor co-wrote the screenplay, by the way. (John Farmer / Morgan Creek Production)

Opening up about his depression

With hits like “The Mask,” left, and “Dumb and Dumber,” Carrey’s star kept rising. But mega-success couldn’t drive away the dark cloud hanging over him. Carrey turned to Prozac to get through his toughest times, but he has since learned to do without. “I rarely drink coffee,” he told “60 Minutes.” “I’m very serious about no alcohol, no drugs. Life is too beautiful.” (New Line Cinema)

Snubbed by Oscar. Twice.

Carrey put comedy aside in the late ‘90s to star in “The Truman Show” and “Man on the Moon.” His failure to garner an Oscar nomination for either was seen by fans as a criminal oversight.

Carrey, however, says he’s at peace with it.

“I realize I’ve been tempted by the thought of respectability, seduced by credibility,” he told USA Today. “That’s temptation, too, to crave respectability. And you know what? Screw everybody if they don’t respect me.” (Melinda Sue Gordon / Paramount Pictures)

Done with marriage?

Carrey has tied – and untied – the knot twice, once with actress Melissa Womer and once with actress Lauren Holly.

He was also engaged to Renée Zellweger. For now, however, he’s done with marriage.

When asked about his girlfriend, Jenny McCarthy, left, Carrey told “Access Hollywood”, “We’re never getting married, but we’re never getting divorced, which is fantastic.” (John Sciulli / Berliner Studio / BEImages)

His cause

Carrey created an ad for the Human Rights Action Center and the U.S. Campaign for Burma to help free Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest in Myanmar for working against Gen. Than Shwe’s oppressive military regime. (Gary He / AP)

Down time

When life gets to be too much, Carrey retreats to the beach. He vacations in Hawaii or kicks back at his Malibu pad. He spends the day reading scripts and taking eight-mile jogs on the sand. That’s a lot of miles! (Clarence Williams / Los Angeles Times)
