Karl Lagerfeld, the longtime creative director of Chanel and pioneering fashion icon, died Tuesday morning in Paris at age 85, prompting an outpouring of admiration on social media.
Shortly after Lagerfeld’s death was announced, Virginie Viard was named his successor and will take the reins as Chanel’s creative director. For more than three decades, Viard worked closely with Lagerfeld as studio director of fashion creation.
“Today the world lost a giant among men,” Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, said in a statement. “His creative genius was breathtaking and to be his friend was an exceptional gift. Karl was brilliant, he was wicked, he was funny, he was generous beyond measure, and he was deeply kind. I will miss him so very much.”

I was 18 and this was one of my first major fashion shows I walked in. To be the bride at Chanel was as big as it got! I remember being so terrified but Karl, Linda and Naomi et al, were all so sweet and protective of me. K… https://t.co/VUnIhWnWCP pic.twitter.com/i3ABEeEvHd

My first Instagram post taken 8yrs ago in Karl’s library / studio. I spent so many nights here. Karl always liked to design at Chanel during the day and then shoot all night in his studio. I don’t know when he slept, he was the hardest working man in fashion. #KarlLagerfeld pic.twitter.com/VPY1PlDnRA— Coco Rocha (@cocorocha) February 19, 2019
