Another kidnap victim also made headlines this week when ABC News announced it had hired Elizabeth Smart as a commentator. Smart, who was abducted at 14 and held captive for six months, will join the network in a few weeks offering perspective on missing-person and abducted-child cases. “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” got the ax over at ABC, but they aren’t going away for good. When the canceled shows wrap in September and January, they will pick up again on a new web TV channel. Prospect Park, the company behind the deal, plans to bring over the cast and crew from each show, but the move might be easier said than done. Chances are there will be some pay cuts involved.

Paris Hilton‘s Fourth of July plans turned sour when an alleged stalker decided to pay an unexpected visit. The heiress called the police after a man was spotted on the beach outside her Malibu beach house. James Rainford was arrested on suspicion of violating a restraining order. Rainford had previously pleaded no contest to trespass in January for banging on Hilton’s door and guilty of misdemeanor battery in April after an altercation with her then-boyfriend, Cy Waits.   (Andreu Dalmau / EPA)
