UNDERRATED

‘Brothers at War’ (2009): At a time when it’s too easy to forget there are still service personnel fighting overseas (the end of “combat operations” aside), this documentary offers a raw, sobering reminder. Directed by the eldest brother of a family with two sons serving in Iraq and Afghanistan who looks to understand his brothers’ experience, the film is a raw examination of the duty many of us feel to defend our country, and how grateful we should be for that sacrifice.

Sean Rowe’s ‘Magic’: Now that the spectacle of the Grammys has passed, look for this singer-songwriter to follow in the footsteps of rootsy nominees Ray LaMontagne or Mumford & Sons. Due Tuesday, Rowe’s debut for Anti- Records mostly showcases his haunted baritone and gently plucked guitar. Nothing fancy, just quietly soulful song craft in the tradition of Van Morrison that practically demands an audience around a summer campfire.

OVERRATED

Larry the Cable Guy, historian: The History Channel’s descent into history-free madness isn’t news, given its run of programming such as “Pawn Stars,” but even this drawling comic seems surprised to be hosting the new “Only in America.” Ostensibly a road show about Dan Whitney’s sleeveless bumpkin learning bits of rural Americana, the most educational part was watching NASCAR’s Bill Elliott whip Larry around in a car enough times to make him break character.

The Bieber backlash: Granted, Justin Bieber’s fans got a bit unruly after Esperanza Spalding bested their champion for the best new artist Grammy, but all the vitriol that’s surrounded this teen idol since he got his start has been puzzling to witness. Yes, his music is sugar-dusted fluff laser-targeted to tweens and teens, but otherwise, it’s basically harmless. Anyone old enough to buy a drink who’s complaining needs to realize it’s just not intended for your ears.
