JAZZ

Satoko Fujii Ma-Do Quartet The lineup for this ensemble led by this Tokyo-born pianist seems conventional by jazz standards (trumpet, bass and drums), but the vast acreage of musical ground covered is anything but. Fujii’s set at the 2009 Angel City Jazz Festival set the Ford Amphitheatre ablaze with passages of delicate beauty interspersed with high-flying improvisation; this all-acoustic ensemble should deliver something equally transfixing. The Blue Whale, 123 Astronaut E S Onizuka St., Suite 301. 8:30 p.m., $10. https://www.bluewhalemusic.com.

COMEDY

Tim Minchin The Australian musician-comedian-actor takes the stage with only a grand piano and his intelligent sense of humor during this rare Southland appearance. His current musical comedy repertoire spans such topics as environmentalism, rationalism and prejudice. Largo at the Coronet, 366 N. La Cienega Blvd., 8:30 p.m. $25. (310) 855-0350. largo-la.com.

EVENTS

Neil Gaiman In his ambitious and visionary 2001 novel, “American Gods,” the bestselling author ponders an existence where belief in old-fashioned icons such as spirits and gods has been replaced by infatuations with media, celebrity, technology and drugs. To commemorate the 10th anniversary edition, Gaiman will discuss the book with comedian Patton Oswalt. Saban Theatre, 8440 Wilshire Blvd. $15-$35. 8 p.m. (213) 623-1773. https://www.sabantheatre.org.

POP MUSIC

Rihanna “Loud” is, at points, a powerful reminder of the Rihanna of old. The minor-key moments are still her best: “Only Girl (In the World)” revives the chilly trance of “Disturbia” with a newly vigorous vocal performance. “I want to make you beg for it, then I’ll make you swallow your pride,” she sings, adding psychosexual venom to an otherwise orthodox dance-floor plea. With Cee Lo Green. Staples Center, 1111 S. Figueroa St., L.A. 7:30 p.m. $19.75-$99.75. staplescenter.com.
