Michael Brennan Captured on a Pennsylvania afternoon in 1977, the iconic close-up portrait of Muhammad Ali made photographer Brennan’s dreams come true. With his face festooned with sweat beads, bumps and scars, the fighter paused in the corner of the ring in front of the photographer, and the rest is history. An exhibition of Brennan’s photographs of Ali, appropriately titled “Muhammad Ali: 1977,” will be on display, first at Design Within Reach, then at Artworks Gallery in Pasadena. Poetics and Plays Playwright, director and actor David Greenspan will dramatize two very different theories of theater: Aristotle’s “Poetics” and Gertrude Stein’s lecture “Plays.” Juxtaposing the ancient and the modern, the performance complements the Getty exhibition “Modern Antiquity,” on view through Jan. 16. Ice For the fifth year, the corner of 5th Street and Arizona Avenue in Santa Monica will morph into an 8,000-square-foot rink by the beach called, fittingly, Ice. In addition to ice skating, events include an L.A. Kings-hosted hockey clinic, adults-only after-hours broomball, wacky hat Wednesdays, a post-Halloween costume skate and rock ‘n’ skate on Fridays with live bands and DJs. 1324 5th St., Santa Monica. COMEDY

L.A. Comedy Fest The 10th annual installment is a riotous celebration of all things laugh-inducing. It includes 11 days and nights of world premiere features, short films and TV pilots, plus a free panel with the creators of “Reno 911” and a closing-party awards ceremony.
