David Bowie’s ‘Blackstar’ gets an experimental film tribute on Instagram

Even in death, David Bowie's "★" (pronounced "Blackstar") keeps revealing new surprises.
The singer's final, chart-topping album, released Jan. 8, has received a series of 16 short video accompaniments. The clips on "Unbound: A★ InstaMiniSeries" star various artists including actress Patricia Clarkson, Rookie magazine founder Tavi Gevinson and others, who all got an early listen to "★" to make their own films inspired by the work.
A brief trailer for the series takes the same avant-garde tone as the album, with flashes of harsh noise, eerie flickering figures and brief moments of beauty and clarity that suggest a complementary mood piece rather than a straight music video.
The series was directed and written by Carolynn Cecilia and Nikki Borges, and produced by Lawrence Peryer. The 16-episode series debuts on Instagram at 8 p.m. Thursday. New clips are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Peryer said in a statement that, "In light of recent events, this project has taken on new significance for all of us – cast and crew. We are very happy to be bringing a new creative work to David’s fans worldwide at a time when a focus on his music and art is much-needed.”
