The xx reveals new single, two more L.A. dates

U.K. minimalists the xx will unveil new songs next Monday at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, a concert that sold out within moments of going on sale. With such instant demand, the question was when, not if, additional dates would be announced. The act won’t be back to L.A. until the fall, but it has slated two local dates onto its upcoming roster.

The xx will play Oct. 12 at the Hollywood Palladium and the following night will appear in the more intimate setting of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. An on sale date has not yet been unveiled for the Palladium concert, but tickets for the graveyard will go on sale Friday at noon. There’s a two ticket limit, and each will cost $38.50, not including surcharges. The show at Hollywood Forever will be outdoors among the crypts.

Everyone who purchases ticket to the fall tour will receive a download of the band’s forthcoming album, “Coexist,” on its Sept. 11 release date. It’s the follow-up to the band’s critically adored self-titled 2009 debut, an album that took off after NBC heavily used its track “Intro” during its coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

With today’s announcement also comes the reveal of new single “Angels.” The song is the ballad at its most deconstructed. The vocals of Romy Madley-Croft at times feel as if they’re going to evaporate, especially when she sings the chorus of “being in love with you as I am,” letting the word “love” fade in and out.

The vocals of Oliver Sim are not present on this initial peek at “Coexist,” but his presence is felt. His guitar softly lurks behind his vocalist, not shadowing her so much as trying to sneak around her without being noticed. The softly hushed melody is that of a broken lullaby, the drawn-out notes putting more of an emphasis on silence than structure. It’s conjures the stark, solitary, contemplative world the xx traffics in so well.
