ABC cancels ‘Malibu Country,’ ‘Body of Proof’

ABC didn’t stop its trimming with “Happy Endings.” The network will not bring back “Malibu Country” or “Body of Proof” either.

The network may have stuck with one of its musical performers (“Nashville”), but it has dropped its comedy version, “Malibu Country.” The laffer, part of the network’s attempt at reviving its TGIF comedy block on Fridays, starred Reba McEntire as a country singer who uprooted her family and moved them to Malibu after her husband’s extramarital affair went public. The series carved out quite a following, averaging about 7 million total viewers during its run and a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic -- despite showrunner turnaround behind the scenes. But that wasn’t enough to keep the music going.

Also getting dropped is third-season Tuesday drama “Body of Proof.” After some retooling this season -- more law enforcement, less medical stuff -- the procedural remained pretty even with its “Dancing with the Stars” lead-in, averaging nearly 8 million viewers, and pulled in a 1.9 in the adult demo. But maybe the network saw more potential in its drama pilots.
