Gift Pick No. 30: Mirena Kim nesting bowls

Culver City artist Mirena Kim says she fell in to pottery out of necessity following a “fruitless search for a simple, unadorned cylinder.”

Today, the graphic designer-turned-potter creates economical vessels, building a repertoire of bottles, cups, salt cellars and more with little decoration, but loads of character.

For the holidays, Kim has created a series of wheel-thrown, high-fired nesting bowls that are 3 1/2, 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 inches in diameter. The pieces are made with durable stoneware and glazed by hand in her studio, making them the latest picks for our Handmade Holidays gift guide.

The set is dishwasher- and microwave-safe and available for $95 at OK (8303 W. 3rd St., Los Angeles), Goods (1748 Ocean Park Blvd., Santa Monica), Salt (1114 Abbot Kinney, Venice) or by appointment at Kim’s studio. (310) 403-7890.
