The Land of Nod has come to the Mall of Malls: South Coast Plaza.

The children’s decor store, part of the Crate & Barrel empire, opened its first West Coast store over the weekend in Costa Mesa. Discriminating toddlers with a taste for the modern can make-believe in play houses and pedal around play cars while moms and dads browse bed ensembles, coat racks, gliders and rugs.

The 4,255-square-foot space, on Level 3 of the shopping center’s Crate & Barrel wing, follows three Land of Nods in suburban Chicago and one in Seattle. In the E-commerce era, when shoppers on sites such as Fab are willing to buy home furnishings online without actually sitting in that lounge chair or examining that $259 quilt in person, why the brick-and-mortar expansion here?

A Land of Nod spokeswoman said the goal is to help would-be customers visualize whole rooms and see coordinated combinations of looks. For inspiration, the store also has a rainbow-hued brick wall that might provide a kid-room decorating idea. More details on that later in the week on L.A. at Home.
