Steal this look: Poketo’s DIY table
Ted Vadakan and Angie Myung wanted to outfit their new L.A. boutique, Poketo, with display tables that were not only modern but also inexpensive. Their solution was a cool, custom look that could easily translate as a DIY desk.
“I wanted the look to be simple, honest and modern,” said Vadakan, who agreed to share the materials and process with readers. One key, Vadakan said, was a solid-core birch door repurposed as a tabletop. He bought 42-by-80-inch doors, $138 each, from Taylor Brothers Architectural Products in Silver Lake, but stock doors at most hardware stores also would work. “The cost was low, and it had a cool, neutral color.”
The yellow legs — $30 Home Depot metal sawhorses, actually — added a sense of fun.
“I loved the thin, minimal legs, the metal construction and the bright pop of yellow,” Vadakan said.
A bonus? The legs are adjustable, which allows them to create Poketo vignettes at various heights (and would accommodate desk users of different heights). The legs also fold up, so the tables can be stored flat.
Construction is easy. The sawhorse legs are pre-drilled, Vadakan said, so they simply need to be screwed to the door. To protect the table top and give it a light sheen, Vadakan finished his door with a wood sealant. Total cost for a fairly large, sturdy, modern desk: about $250.
