Design your own wall graphic with new Blik tool
You don’t have to be a graphic designer to create your own wall decals at home using a new online tool from the Los Angeles company Blik and the Toronto studio Bruce Mau Design.
“Our company was founded on the concept of DIY,” Blik co-founder Scott Flora said. “The Blik and BMD tool is more than just do-it-yourself; it’s design-it-yourself. This is the first time we’ve allowed users to design a shape, choose a color and create a graphic by themselves.”
How it works: You go to the Blik X BMD page and type in a word or message. Hit “Bloom!” and the online tool will translate your letters into distinctive BMD shapes, which scatter on the screen and morph into colorful collection clouds, sunbursts and other abstractions.
The letter forms are difficult to decipher at first, but that is part of the fun. My children noticed how much fun I was having and begged for our iPad so they could create their own designs.
The tool allows you to layer letters and change colors. Don’t like what you’ve created? Hit clear and start over. (This is where it gets addictive).
A sharing function lets you post designs on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Tumblr, or you can email them to a friend (who may need to reference the graphics glossary to decipher the letters).
When you’re finished with a design, you simply save your work and pay. A 1-by-2-foot self-adhesive graphic is $20; a 2-by-4-foot work is $40. Your graphic will be mailed to you. Each is made with a material free of vinyl, PVC, phthalates and volatile organic compounds.
