MOORE LEAGUE

Long Beach Poly 68, Long Beach Wilson 46
Judith Smith scored 19 points Wednesday, and Long Beach Poly all but clinched its fourth consecutive Moore League girls’ basketball title.

The second-ranked Jackrabbits aren’t out of the woods, but they’re close. They are two games ahead of fourth-ranked Long Beach Wilson, which it beat, 68-46, with three games to play. Only one remaining league opponent, No. 13 Long Beach Millikan, has a legitimate chance of beating Poly (20-1, 9-0), the state’s second-ranked team.

“We don’t even talk about the Moore League,” said Coach Carl Buggs, who does talk about Southern Section and state titles and figures another league banner will fall into place.

Smith added 10 assists and three steals to her 19 points, and the victory followed a familiar pattern. Holding a 31-29 halftime lead by virtue of Crystal Brown’s eight-foot runner as time expired, Poly scored 13 of the first 15 points of the second half. A few moments later, they peeled off another 15-2 run that provided a 61-37 lead.

“It’s frustrating,” said Neka Mixon, who scored 16 for Wilson (21-7, 7-2). “It’s not like they’re unbeatable.”

Last time they played, Poly trailed at halftime, 26-18, and had a 16-2 fourth-quarter outburst en route to a 49-40 victory.

“Maybe it’s character and we play better with our backs to the wall,” Buggs said. “As a coach, you don’t want to live your season like that. ... [but] I know we’ll get a run somewhere.”

Brae Butler added 11 points and LaToya Fairley eight for Poly. Krystle Mays scored seven with a team-high six rebounds.

“Sometimes as a coach, you can’t always explain things,” said Paula Clear, Wilson’s coach. “I’m really disappointed in our second-half effort.”

This virtually assures that when the Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs begin in two weeks, Wilson will be matched on the same bracket as defending champion Lynwood, which is ranked No.1 in the Southland.
