Man shot by deputies after freeway chase, gun battle, officials say
A man was shot by sheriff’s deputies Tuesday after he and another person led them on a car chase in East Los Angeles and engaged them in a gun battle, authorities said.
Deputies with the Los Angeles County sheriff’s gang unit responded to a call Tuesday afternoon in the 4200 block of Michigan Avenue, where people said a man had shot at them and fled in a 2013 Mercedes-Benz.
None of those shot at were injured, according to the sheriff’s department.
Authorities said they later saw a car with a passenger inside who matched the suspect’s description and tried to initiate a traffic stop.
The suspects led persuing deputies onto the southbound 710 Freeway then exited at Humphreys Avenue, crashing into a stop sign, the sheriff’s department said.
The passenger then allegedly fired on the deputies and the Mercedes continued north on Humphreys until it hit railroad tracks and became disabled. That’s when the passenger exited the car with a handgun, and again exchanged gunfire with deputies, according to the sheriff’s department.
Authorities said the passenger was struck in the torso but was expected to survive. The driver of the Mercedes was taken into custody.
Their identities were not immediately released.
