Officers say the male cat was 2 to 3 years old.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife official Marty Wall said each mountain lion that officers encounter is to be tagged and logged. The lion killed Monday was not one that had previously been in contact with officers, he said.

Wall said the carcass is being stored in a freezer for further study.
