Radioactive testing gear in Duarte no threat, authorities say
A report of a “radioactive box” that prompted authorities to cordon off an area near the Rancho Duarte golf course Thursday afternoon was deemed not to be a threat, authorities said.
Authorities dispatched a hazardous materials team to deal with the box found in a silver four-door sedan that collided with a telephone pole near the intersection of Los Lomas Road and East Huntington Drive.
Officials determined it to be radiological testing equipment.
As a precaution, investigating officials cordoned off a 300-foot area around the vehicle and closed some nearby businesses.
Officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department investigated the materials and determined that while they emitted low levels of radioactivity, they were not harmful.
