Carting around town

Sometimes, fun photography gets made when the initial intentions are motivated by a higher calling. This was the case for professional portrait photographer Max S. Gerber. His higher calling is being a work-at-home dad to his son, Clark.

He has a series of photos of his young son, a.k.a. #clarkincarts. The pictures started when Gerber took the boy around on errands and found that Clark really enjoyed the ride in carts. “He screams and points at balloons. He bounces and laughs when we go fast. Sometimes, I just take him to stores to push him around the parking lot in a cart just to keep him amused.”

This photograph of 11-month-old Clark with Gerber’s wife was made outside of the Ikea in Carson. It was the first time someone else had jumped into the cart with Clark, which delighted him.

The variety and consistency of Gerber’s photos are fun to view and follow. It’s a journey that Gerber created when his wife first became pregnant as a way to share pictures with family and friends. This is what I consider the essence of California Moments: finding the fun in the everyday.

All the photographs are on Gerber’s Instagram and so far made with an iPhone 6.

Aside from Clark being such a willing model — a dream for a photographer/father — this exercise has given Gerber a wider view of commercial architecture of Los Angeles.
