PASSINGS: Princess Fawzia
Princess Fawzia, 92, a member of Egypt’s last royal family and the first wife of Iran’s later-deposed monarch, died Tuesday in Egypt’s Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, according to Paris-based Iranian opposition groups. The cause was not immediately known.
Fawzia was the daughter of Egyptian King Fuad I, who ruled until 1936. Her brother and nephew later rose to the throne before the monarchy was toppled in 1952.
In 1939, the 17-year-old Fawzia married Iran’s then-crown prince, 19-year-old Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Fawzia gave birth to a daughter the next year but left Iran in 1945 to return to Egypt. The couple divorced in 1948, and the Iranian shah was overthrown in the 1979 Islamic revolution.
Fawzia remarried in 1949 to an Egyptian military officer. After the Egyptian royal family was ousted, she maintained a home in Alexandria but often visited Paris.
