Atty. Gen. Loretta Lynch: Do not let this week become a new normal in America

U.S. Atty. Gen. Loretta Lynch said federal law enforcement agencies already are cooperating in the investigation of the Dallas shootings.

“We intend to provide any assistance that we can to investigate the attack and also to help heal a community that has been severely shaken and deeply scarred by an unfathomable tragedy,” Lynch said at a news conference in Washington, D.C.

Lynch said the shootings marked the latest violence in a week of “profound grief and heartbreaking loss.”

Americans across the country are feeling a sense of hopelessness, uncertainty and fear, she said, but the response “must not be violence.”

Rather, it should be “calm, peaceful and collaborative action,” she said.

Lynch said communities must work to build trust between the public and law enforcement and above all, “reject the easy impulses of bitterness and rancor.”

“To our brothers and sisters who wear the badge, I want you to know I am deeply grateful for the difficult and dangerous work you do every day,” she said.

Lynch added that the voices of those who seek to improve the country through peaceful protest are equally important.

“To all Americans, I ask you, I implore you, do not let this week precipitate a new normal in this country,” Lynch said. “Turn to each other, not against each other.”
