Declaring that gay unions deserve equal respect and dignity under the law, the Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry nationwide without regard to their state’s laws.

The 5-4 opinion, written by Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, will stand as a landmark in civil rights law and culminates a two-decade struggle for gays and lesbians to win marriage equality under the Constitution.

Same-sex couples “ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right,” Kennedy wrote.
