Bangladeshi diplomats seek U.S. OK to visit terror plot suspect

Bangladeshi diplomats met Friday with officials from the U.S. State Department and the Department of Justice to discuss the case of a Bangladeshi man facing terrorism charges in connection with a plot to blow up the Federal Reserve Bank building in New York.
The meeting in Washington included discussions about visits between Bangladeshi consul officials and suspect Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, a State Department spokeswoman said by telephone. She did not give further details.
Nafis, 21, is in custody without bail on terrorism-related charges in New York. The criminal complaint alleges that Nafis traveled by van with what he thought was a co-conspirator to a New York warehouse. He then tried to detonate a 1,000-pound bomb at the Federal Reserve Bank, the complaint says.
The man he thought was a co-conspirator turned out to be an undercover agent, and the detonator was an inoperative cellphone. The public was never in danger, authorities have said.
Earlier Friday, Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said diplomats wanted to meet with U.S. officials to discuss the case.
Nafis’s parents have disputed that their son is a terrorist.
