Republican gubernatorial candidate Tim Donnelly had $54,000 in cash on hand for his campaign as he entered the new year, according to reports he filed with the state Friday.

Donnelly, an assemblyman from Twin Peaks, collected $374,000 last year, mostly in small sums, with only a handful of donations above $5,000. He reported spending $356,000 in 2013.

The figures show the uphill battle facing Donnelly as he seeks California’s highest elective office. The man he hopes to take on in November, incumbent Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, reported a $17-million war chest.
The other main GOP candidate in the race, former U.S. Treasury official Neel Kashkari, did not have to file a financial disclosure because he did not officially enter the race until Jan. 21.

Former Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado, who earlier this month decided not to pursue a gubernatorial bid, reported raising $518,000 in 2013, spending $499,000 and having $23,000 in available cash before he announced he would not run.

Friday’s filings disclosed money raised and spent in the last six months of 2013 and offered cumulative totals for the year.
