The Latest on I-10 shootings: 19-year-old man is questioned

The latest developments on a series of freeway shootings in the Phoenix area. All times are local.

11:40 p.m.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials have released information about a man who was detained for questioning about the Phoenix freeway shootings.

In a press release, the department says a 19-year-old man from the Phoenix suburbs was booked Friday into a Phoenix jail on a charge unrelated to the shooting case — suspicion of marijuana possession.

The department would not provide more information linking him to the shootings other than to say he was questioned.

It’s not clear whether the man detained is the only person of interest. DPS spokesman Bart Graves said Friday night that the shooting scenarios have varied. He says some shootings involved bullets fired at random cars, others involved projectiles — possibly BBs or pellets — and one was apparently road rage.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety believes there are multiple shooters in the Phoenix freeway shootings.

Spokesman Bart Graves tells the Associated Press that the three different types of shootings lead investigators to believe there are multiple shooters. One set of shootings involved bullets at random vehicles, another involved projectiles and one shooting was road rage.

The Department of Public Safety has confirmed 11 shootings since Aug. 29.

Eleven vehicles have been shot since Aug. 29 — eight with bullets and three with projectiles that could include BBs or pellets.

Arizona Department of Public Safety Director Frank Milstead says he believes there are multiple shooters in the Phoenix freeway shootings.

Milstead told The Arizona Republic that “it does not appear to be the same guy.”

He says it appears that some of the shootings apparently stem from road rage and some of the shootings involve bullets while others involve projectiles.

The Department of Public Safety has confirmed 11 shootings since Aug. 29.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has been briefed by a state law enforcement official on the investigation into a string of Phoenix freeway shootings.

Photos from the governor’s official Twitter account show him meeting with state police Col. Frank Milstead and speaking with staff at a police operations center.

The Republican governor has been in regular contact with state police all week about the shootings.

Earlier Friday, Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said authorities were questioning a man in the case and had seized a white Chevrolet Tahoe.

A man who was getting coffee near a convenience store where two people were detained for questioning in a string of Phoenix freeway shootings says he watched as law officers swarmed the area.

Marco Mansilla says he was getting coffee Friday at a McDonald’s connected to the convenience store when the parking lot filled with patrol cars. He says officers advised him to temporarily stay inside.

Once he left to head back to his window-tinting business across the street, Mansilla says he saw a man sitting inside a police car. A woman was handcuffed and standing beside a police car with four officers.

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves confirmed the man and woman were detained for questioning but says only the man is of interest to investigators. He says authorities seized their SUV and will examine it for evidence.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says investigators are focusing on one of two people detained for questioning in a string of Phoenix freeway shootings.

The man and woman were in an SUV when they were detained Friday at a convenience store near Interstate 10. However, department spokesman Bart Graves now says only the man is of interest to investigators.

Graves says the man hasn’t been arrested, but questioning could continue for hours. He had no information on the woman’s status.

Authorities who are questioning two people in a string of Phoenix freeway shootings also seized their vehicle.

Arizona state police say they can’t confirm that shots were fired from one vehicle at another on a Phoenix freeway Friday morning.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves says there’s no physical evidence corroborating a motorist’s report of hearing at least one gunshot.

Television station KNXV earlier reported that DPS vehicles were seen with a red car stopped alongside Interstate 17 in central Phoenix and that the car was then escorted to a secure area at the agency’s nearby headquarters.

Authorities have confirmed that 11 vehicles have been shot at in the Phoenix area, with most of them occurring on freeways.

The 11th incident occurred Thursday morning when authorities found a bullet hole in a commercial truck.

Arizona state police are investigating a report of possible shots being fired on a Phoenix freeway.

The state Department of Public Safety says shots were reportedly fired from one vehicle at another Friday morning but that nothing has been confirmed at this point.

No additional information was released and circumstances of the possible shooting aren’t known.
