The daily search for a cartoon topic is something like filling out your March Madness pool.

The Mideast region is stocked with tough, gritty, explosive contenders. But can the Iraqis play as a team? Does Iran have the big weapons? Israel may have recent history on it’s side, but you can’t overlook the scrappy Palestinian de-fence. Egypt is opening up its game, and Syria and Lebanon are drawing huge crowds.

The Southern region gets no respect, despite tenacious prospects such as AIDS, poverty and environmental destruction. The East is led by powerhouse China; India-Pakistan is a classic rivalry, and unpredictable North Korea can always get hot. In the West, former top seeds Europe and Russia faded in recent polls.

Cartoonists tend to favor the All-Americans. Coach W. has been shifting his lineup, subbing in Wolfowitz at the World Bank and Bolton at the U.N. Social Security is making headlines, and there’s always a marquee-name celebrity or CEO trial.

Of course, choosing a favorite is the easy part. That doesn’t mean we’ve drawn a winner.
