Biden on same-sex marriage: ‘We didn’t make it an issue’ [Video]

Vice President Joe Biden said he and President Obama are “in the same place” on same-sex marriage, just more than a week after his comments on the issue forced the president to hasten his public declaration of support.

In an interview with CBS affiliate WTRF during a stop in southeast Ohio on Thursday, Biden reiterated Obama’s position that it would be up to each state to “determine for themselves how they’re going to treat the issue of marriage.”

At the same time, he said everyone is “entitled to the same exact rights.”

“You don’t get when you’re born to say, ‘Hey, guess what I want to be ... .’ You are what you are,” Biden said. “To us it’s a pretty basic thing.”

Biden apologized to the president last week for getting ahead of him on the issue in comments taped for an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” Obama sat down for an interview with ABC the following Wednesday, and said, “It is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.”

“We didn’t make it an issue, we were asked a question,” Biden told WTRF, which is based in Wheeling, W.Va., but serves parts of Ohio where the vice president campaigned. “I was asked how I feel about it, and I said I feel comfortable.”
