Ron Calderon to speak to reporters about FBI raid on his office

Share

Less than a week after the FBI raided his office, state Sen. Ron Calderon (D-Montebello) plans to talk to reporters today about a federal investigation into his legislative activities.

Calderon’s office put out an advisory saying he “will address the news media today at noon outside of Room 215, located off the Senate floor.”

Mark Geragos, Calderon’s attorney, has said his client has not broken the law and said Monday that the senator was returning to work at the Capitol after nearly a week’s absence.

Meanwhile, the top U.S. attorney on the case said Friday that his office is in the nascent stage of an investigation after last Tuesday’s FBI raids of Calderon’s office.

“We are gathering the evidence. We will go where the evidence takes us before we make any decisions,” said André Birotte Jr., the U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, said in an interview on the KPCC radio program “Air Talk.”

He disputed charges by Geragos that federal officials have overreached in raiding Calderon’s office to distract the public from controversies involving the alleged IRS targeting of conservative groups.

“We are justice-driven,” Birotte said. “We are not politically driven.”
