The runoff election for the 32nd Senate District in San Bernardino and L.A. counties is set for Tuesday, and Democratic candidate Norma Torres and Republican contender Paul S. Leon are campaigning down to the wire.

Torres, a state Assemblywoman from Pomona, has an advantage in campaign cash and voter registration in the district, which is 49% Democrat and 28% Republican.

The district includes Fontana, Montclair and San Bernardino. The seat became vacant when Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-Chino) was elected to Congress.

Leon, the mayor of Ontario, has campaigned as the candidate of change.

“I simply believe my Republican values play a big part in putting people back to work in California,” Leon said. He also has called for Sacramento to live within its means.

Torres said her top priorities include creating good-paying jobs, making education and healthcare more accessible and affordable, improving public safety and reducing waste in government.

Torres’ campaign has raised $194,000 to Leon’s $76,000 since March 31, the beginning of the last filing period. Her contributors include Chevron, Sempra Energy, the California Federation of Teachers and the California Professional Firefighters.

Independently, more than $130,000 has been spent on mailers, field workers and other campaign help to benefit Torres by groups including Californians for Good Schools and Good Jobs. That group is financed by interests including Blue Shield of California, Consumer Attorneys Independent Campaign Committee, Phillips 66 Co., the California Federation of Teachers and the California Tribal Business Alliance, which represents Indian casino operators.

Leon’s contributors include Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff of Diamond Bar, Prime Healthcare Services, L & M Dairy and the San Bernardino County Firefighters State PAC.
