Firefighters battled a 20-acre brush fire Monday in Irvine that forced the closure of southbound Laguna Canyon Road, authorities said.

The fire was reported about 9 a.m. half a mile south of Lake Forest Drive, just west of the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, said Capt. Larry Kurtz, spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed as crews worked to contain the fire, prompting a SigAlert — notifying drivers of the delay — to be issued at about 10:15 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The closures were expected to last until about 2 p.m., according to the CHP.

Crews were able to contain the fire by about 11:30 a.m. More than 80 firefighters and three fire department helicopters were needed to extinguish the flames, Kurtz said.

Firefighters were able to avoid power lines, and no other structures were threatened. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, Kurtz said.
