Column: Alt Christmas gifts make Laguna unique

In this era of alt, of course there needs to be an alternative Christmas gift guide.

Some would argue that in Laguna Beach, everything is alternative, which is fair. So consider this a snapshot of 10 cool stores — some offbeat, some obscure and all worthy in one way or another.

In other words, I just kind of like these shops and maybe you will too as you’re looking for gifts. So without further ado, here is my seventh annual “Alt Xmas Gift Guide.”

10. Brands without the price

This is like a private, hard-to-find, home-shopping party. Because of her work in design and marketing, owner Melissa Martinez gets prototype swag from companies like Sanuk, UGG, Quicksilver and others. What all this means is cheap, cheap, cheap hats, shirts and accessories. Tip on finding the place: It’s across the street from the Laguna Art Museum, second floor.

9. Unexpected garden gifts.

If you think this is just a flower store, think again. The English Garden is bigger than you think and has local jewelry, art and fun, funky gifts. Of course as a full-service florist, the flower arrangements and plants are attractive and well done. But it’s the affordable, unique gifts that are a bonus.

8. Seasoning makes life better

If you cook, this store is probably already in your rotation. If you don’t cook, you should learn because then you could buy exotic spices and impress your guests. At the very least, you can buy spices, teas, olive oils and balsamic vinegars for others. There are also handy assorted gift packs that are popular.

7. Art without pretense

Laguna is home to the largest vintage poster shop on the West Coast, and owner Gary Gibson will bend your ear about every one of his rare and curated posters. His latest masterpiece is a $7,500 “Wizard of Oz” original. “It’s probably the only copy of it left in the world,” he said.

6. Get whimsy

Madison Square resembles its owner, Jon Madison: tasteful and flamboyant with just the right amount of naughty. Whether it’s rainbow Village People-like ornaments or clever Christmas scenes in miniature TVs, Madison blends flair with distinction.

5. Home décor made easy

Vertigo, 1550 S Coast Hwy., www.vertigohome.us.

Vertigo is the kind of designer store where you stand in place and stare, mesmerized by the evocative, European housewares. At times, you’re challenged to figure out what the gadget does. It could be a bottle opener, fountain pen or a 007 missile launcher. You’re not quite sure but it’s super awesome, whatever it is.

4. Men’s clothing made easy

Melrose Place, 361 Forest Ave., (949) 497-5533.

Laguna men should thank Gila Leibovitch for clothing them. As the owner of Melrose Place and the nearby Vault stores, Leibovitch has made it almost too easy to look urbane without being a poser. Simply walk in, point anywhere and purchase. Repeat as needed.

3. Women’s clothing in another league

When you’re ready to step up your fashion game, make an appointment with Katharine Story. The well-traveled Laguna native designs eclectic, one-of-a-kind, transformative outfits for women. Do you need some courage to wear them? Maybe a little. Is it worth it? Absolutely.

2. It never gets old

It goes without saying that if you need one location to shop for Christmas, go to the Sawdust. It’s really a no-brainer. Original, hand-made, reasonably priced gifts always make a lasting impression. Besides, you’re supporting local artists who rely on the show to make a living. Be sure to get there before Dec. 17.

1. Keep it real

Charities. And the No. 1 gift suggestion is to give to local non-profits.

While national disasters have hit hard this year, there’s still plenty of local need. Consider donating to Laguna nonprofits that have proven results. Some of my favorites: Boys and Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach; The Friendship Shelter; Laguna Beach Community Clinic and No Square Theatre.
