Breakers own OCL

The Laguna Beach High boys’ and girls’ swim teams remained undefeated in Orange Coast League meet competition by scoring victories Wednesday over Estancia at the Laguna pool.

The varsity boys’ team defeated the Eagles, 117-48. Cameron Karkosa set a new CIF automatic qualifying time in the 100 freestyle with a 48.32 seconds finish. In the boys’ 200 free, the Breakers finished 1-2-3 and all three swimmers set a personal record in the event. Billy Renner won the race in 1:51.30, Riley Bumgardner (2:01.96) was second, and Lucas Austin (2:05.79) third.

The girls’ team won, 124-44. Claire Stone took first place in the girls’ 100 free with a new PR time of 57.53.

Both Laguna teams improved to 4-0 in league with one final league dual meet remaining next Wednesday (3:15 p.m.) against Calvary Chapel.

Both varsity teams are competing at the 44th annual Foothill Swim Games at Foothill High. The girls’ prelims were held Thursday and the boys’ prelims are Friday. The top 16 swimmers in each event from prelims advance to finals Saturday.

The Breakers, ranked second in CIF-SS Division 4, won four matches over a seven-day period to run their overall record to 14-2.

Two of those wins came by shutout, 18-0 victories over Saddleback Tuesday and April 14 at Godinez. The Breakers also eased past host Estancia Monday, 17-1. The three wins took their league record to 7-0 in league.

Coach Don Davis said “the subs played well” in Tuesday’s win against Saddleback.

“The boys jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back,” he said.

In a nonleague match April 15, the Breakers defeated visiting Palm Springs, 14-4. Ryan Gee swept at No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-0, 6-0) and at the No. 2 doubles line, Ethan Gee/Hayden Seitz won their two sets (7-6, 6-1), and Jake Pietig/Taylor Tran won a set (6-2).

Boys’ Volleyball

The Breakers completed a two-match Orange Coast League sweep of Godinez by sweeping the host Grizzlies Tuesday, 25-22, 2512, 25-20. Junior outside hitter Peter Obradovich had eight kills and seven digs, junior libero Cole Paxson 21 digs, and setters Bruce Knill (junior) and Isaac Wulff (senior) had 21 and 12 assists, respectively.

The 74th consecutive league match victory put the Breakers, the No. 2 team in CIF Southern Section Division 2, at 6-0 in league and 8-5 overall.

The Breakers previously won by sweep at Saddleback April 14, 25-12, 25-15, 25-16. Senior middle blocker/outside hitter Tyler Alter had 10 kills and five digs, senior opposite Luke Jamison nine kills, and Paxson 14 digs, and Wulff eight digs and 21 assists.

The Breakers took on Costa Mesa in league play Thursday. The score wasn’t available at press time. Next week, they host Calvary Chapel Tuesday (5:15 p.m.) and travel Thursday to Estancia (5:30 p.m.).

Ryan Gee (singles) and Ethan Gee and Hayden Seitz (doubles) entered the CIF portion of the 116th The 116th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament which got underway Tuesday and continues today through Saturday.

Boys’ Golf

Kyle Sharp shot a one over-par Tuesday and the Breakers won for the eighth time against Orange Coast League competition by defeating visiting Calvary Chapel, 186-223 at Ben Brown’s Golf Course (par 32).

Sharp’s 33 score earned him match medalist honors. The Breakers stayed undefeated (8-0) in league play and put their overall record at 8-3.

The Breakers also took on Calvary Chapel Monday at Mile Square Park’s Classic Golf Course (par 36), and scored a 194-222 win over the Eagles. Freshman Chase Gioffredi shot a 38 score and was one of several “standout performers” for the Breakers, Coach Scott Finn said.

Surfing

The Laguna Beach surf team competed Saturday in the Scholastic Surf Series High School State Championships at the Oceanside South Jetty.

The Breakers advanced against Half Moon Bay High in the Boys’ Shortboard division competition behind the performances of Vann Allen, Travis Booth and Jett North in Heat 1, Noah North, Nate Madigan and Dylan Davis in Heat 2, and Liam McCue, Dante Madrigal and Jameson Roller in Heat 3.

The Breakers were eliminated in their next competition against top-seeded San Clemente.

In Girls’ Longboard against Malibu, Lola Fisher, Anika Pitz and Rachel Kenny competed for the Breakers and tied in points, but were edged out in a tie-breaker.

In Boys’ Longboard against Malibu, Jameson Roller, Dylan Brashier and Gaal Shonfeld gave strong rides but the Breakers lost the competition by a point.

In Girls’ Shortboard against Malibu, performances by Kayla Coscino, Claire Kelly and Destiny Thompson advanced the Breakers to the next round where they would be eliminated in a one-point loss to San Dieguito.

The Breakers’ Bodyboard team of Cole Fink and Spencer Davis gave solid performances against Edison but was lost in a tie-breaker to the Chargers.

In the Individual High School State competition Monday, Kayla Coscino (second) was a finalist in Girls’ Shortboard, and Jake Levine (fifth) was a finalist in Boys’ Shortboard.

Also in the individual competition, Travis Booth reached the semifinals, Zach Levine placed seventh and Liam McCue gave a strong performance in Boys’ Shortboard, Jameson Roller advanced to the Boys’ Longboard semifinals, Claire Kelly (Girls’ Shortboard) and Cole Fink (Bodyboard) performed solidly.

Track and Field

The Breakers will compete Saturday at the Orange County Championships at Mission Viejo High.

Girls’ Sand Volleyball

The Breakers play a pair of Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League South Coast Division matches Saturday against El Toro and Saddleback Valley Christian at Huntington City Beach.
