Briefs: Men’s Laguna Open starts Saturday

The 61st annual Men’s Laguna Open Volleyball Tournament will be played Saturday and Sunday at Main Beach in Laguna Beach.

Matches will start 9 a.m. both days. The main draw consists of 24 of the highest ranked teams (California Beach Volleyball Assn. and USA Volleyball rating points). Another four local teams are included as well as any past champions (with an exemption).

The double-elimination professional tournament is free of charge.

USA Water Polo Women’s Senior National Team Head Coach Adam Krikorian has named the roster of 14 athletes that will compete at the upcoming FINA World League Super Final in Shanghai, China. Team USA includes sisters Makenzie and Aria Fischer of Laguna Beach.

Team USA opens competition Tuesday against Brazil in group play. Other group play opponents include Canada and Spain.

The Team USA roster includes 13 athletes who represented the U.S. at the FINA Women’s Intercontinental Tournament in Texas in February and the Olympic Qualification Tournament in the Netherlands in March. One addition to the roster from those events is defender Alys Williams (Huntington Beach).

The FINA World League Super Final represents the final major international tournament before the Olympic Games start on Aug. 9 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. USA Water Polo will announce the 2016 U.S. Olympic Women’s Water Polo Team on June 16.

Team USA is currently in Kunshan, China competing in the Kunshan Cup, a warm-up event for the FINA World League Super Final. Through two days of competition, the U.S. has defeated Brazil (18-3) and lost to Australia (5-4). The U.S. will play Canada, China and Shanghai (club team) before concluding play Friday.
