A body discovered Friday evening in Huntington Harbour has been identified as 58-year-old Larry Sarver, a resident of the city who was reported missing earlier in the week.

Larry Esslinger, a supervising deputy coroner with the Orange County Coroner Division, confirmed Sarver’s identity Saturday morning. The cause of death is unknown and an autopsy is scheduled, he said.

Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Gil said a kayaker in the harbor alerted Huntington Beach police around 5:10 p.m. Friday about the body, which was found near the 16000 block of Wanderer Lane.

In a separate case, the identity of a man whose body was found on New Year’s Eve about a mile off the harbor was still unknown Monday, authorities said. Officials said the body appeared to have been in the ocean for up to six weeks.

An autopsy was performed, but the cause of death also is unknown. Results of toxicology reports could take to up four months, officials said.

The man was described as Middle Eastern or African American, 5 foot 8, with an average build and short dark hair.
