Huntington hopes trash-bin covers will put lid on litter
Huntington Beach plans to spend about $122,000 to put lids on trash receptacles across the city in an effort to keep trash in the bins and animals out of them.
Community Services Director Janeen Laudenback and city engineer Tom Herbel briefed council members about the plan during a study session Monday.
The city is looking to spend about $33,000 for removable plastic lids for the 550 drum-style trash receptacles at the beach.
About 400 drum-style bins at Central Park would be fitted with removable dome covers at a cost of about $51,000.
Concrete receptacles at the sports complex, the downtown area and bus stops are planned to be fitted with flip lids at a cost of about $38,000 ($15,000 for the 80 bins at the sports complex and $23,000 for the 120 bins around downtown and at bus stops).
Installation of the new covers is scheduled to begin Jan. 1.
City staff also wants to add sliding lids for large trash bins, which would be paid for by Rainbow Environmental Services.
