A Huntington Beach man was sentenced Wednesday to three years in state prison for speeding and nearly hitting police officers while fleeing from authorities.

Adrian Coates, 18, pleaded guilty in July to stealing a vehicle, aggravated assault on an officer and evading police while driving recklessly, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.

At about 2:50 a.m. April 26, Huntington Beach police tried to pull over a Honda Accord driven by Coates for vehicle code violations. The car had been reported stolen, authorities said.

Coates sped away, leading two police vehicles to the Nalu Circle cul-de-sac. Coates turned the Honda around and sped toward police, prompting one of them to shoot at the car, according to the district attorney’s office.

An Orange County Sheriff’s Department helicopter crew found the vehicle empty at about 4:05 a.m. near Edgewater Lane and Courtney Drive.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Coates at about 11 p.m. in Costa Mesa during a traffic stop.
