Around Town: Locals treated to awards at Halloween fest

Two Huntington Beach children were among the award winners Sunday as the Orange County Market Place in Costa Mesa hosted contests for ghoulish talents, cars and costumes during the 18th annual Trick or Treat Festival.

Brayden Beyer, 11, took third place and a $10 Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour certificate in the 7-to-12 age group of the Scream Contest.

Angie Cruz, 8, placed third in the Day of the Dead Costume Contest, good for a $25 gift card for Who Song and Larry’s Cal-Mex Cantina.

The all-day event at the weekend swap meet at the OC Fair & Event Center also included free trick or treating, Day of the Dead dance performances, carnival side show attractions, puppet making, magic shows and other Halloween activities.

Mobile ski run brings the mountains to H.B.

Can’t wait for snow in the mountains? A 70-foot mobile ski run will be part of the Pray for Snow Winter Ale Tour stopping in Huntington Beach on Friday.

The event, presented by 10 Barrel Brewing Co., will be open to skiers of all skill levels from 4 to 8 p.m. at Huntington Beach Beer Co., 201 Main St.

Superheroes in spotlight at Sunset Beach Halloween party

Iron Man, the Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man and more superheroes will save Sunset Beach from the Joker, the Riddler, Mr. Freeze and other infamous villains when entrepreneur Tony Nobles and the Nobles Family Foundation join the Sunset Beach Community Association in presenting the community’s annual Halloween party from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Sunset Beach Community Center, 16861 12th St., Huntington Beach.

At the free public event, guests can visit the Bat Cave — including the Batmobile, loaned for the event by the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles — Gotham’s haunted Arkham Asylum, Tony Stark’s lab, the Iron Man dunk tank and more.

Masquerade contest at SeaLegs Wine Bar

SeaLegs Wine Bar in Huntington Beach will partner with Veuve Clicquot champagne to host the annual Yelloween Masquerade beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday.

The event will offer $60 bottles of Veuve Clicquot, live entertainment and a masquerade costume contest with a $500 cash prize for the most creative costume.

SeaLegs Wine Bar is at 21022 Beach Blvd. Admission to the event is free.

Tommy Bahama store coming to Pacific City

Tommy Bahama plans to open a store for its island-style clothing at the new Pacific City shopping center on Nov. 5. The 2,348-square-foot store will carry the complete Tommy Bahama collection, as well as home decor items.

A grand-opening celebration is planned for Nov. 7 and 8, when shoppers will receive a gift with a purchase of $100 or more.

The store, at 21028 Pacific Coast Hwy., will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.

H.B. district’s top teacher in running for state honor

Lisa Moloney, the Huntington Beach City School District’s Teacher of the Year, has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the California Teacher of the Year award.

Moloney, who teaches at Joseph R. Perry Elementary School, won the district honor in May.

Auto service center donating to help military families

Oil Can Henry’s, an Oregon-based auto maintenance center that has a location at 9525 Warner Ave. in Fountain Valley, is supporting the National Military Family Association by donating $1 for each vehicle it services and $1 for each new follower on the company’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts through October.

The National Military Family Association is a nonprofit that helps provide counseling, camps and other resources for families dealing with combat injuries, deployment and other challenges.

Huntington car dealership funds 10,000 trees

NitroFill Inc., a manufacturer of nitrogen generation and inflation systems for tires, said Huntington Beach Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is the nation’s first new-car dealer to have funded the purchase and planting of more than 10,000 trees in North America through its participation in the NitroFill Plant-a-Tree program.

Since January 2014, NitroFill and its dealership partners have been funding the purchase and planting of one tree for every vehicle the dealers convert to NitroFill’s tire inflation product.

“Reducing the environmental impact of consumers’ motor vehicles has always been a driving force of our business,” Jay Lighter, president of NitroFill, said in a statement. “But the NitroFill Plant-a-Tree program is a product of our dealers’ desire to push for more immediately tangible proof of their commitment to our planet’s health.”

Former H.B. bike retailer opens new store

Longtime bicycle retailer Sean Flynn, who owned bike shops in Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa until selling them last year, has opened Roam Cyclery at 15232 Goldenwest St. in Westminster.

The store offers bicycles, apparel, components, accessories, equipment and repairs and service.
