Holiday play wraps up

The 29th annual Marina Holiday Classic boys’ soccer tournament ended Dec. 30 with Long Beach Cabrillo claiming the tourney title with a 3-0 finals win over Fullerton, and Lakewood won the consolation title with a 1-0 (penalty kicks) win over Magnolia.

Host Marina went 0-2-1 in the three-day event, dropping its final game, 3-1, to Victor Valley in a consolation championship bracket game. The Vikings’ goal came off a free kick by Steven Carrera which bounced off the top bar of the cage and was put back in by Kai Noble.

“With the team fighting through several injuries and players out sick, we struggled to get a win in the tournament,” Marina Coach Gabriel Lucatero said.

In other boys’ soccer action, Huntington Beach played its final nonleague game Monday and the Oilers scored a 4-0 shutout over visiting Westminster.

The Sunset League boys’ soccer season got underway Wednesday. Scores from the league openers weren’t available at press time.

In Sunset games Friday, Marina hosts defending league champion Huntington Beach (3 p.m.), Edison plays at Los Alamitos (5:30 p.m.), and Fountain Valley hosts Newport Harbor (3 p.m.).

Ocean View begins its Golden West League slate Friday, hosting Santa Ana at 3 p.m.

Girls’ Soccer

Ocean View played visiting Downey Warren to a 2-2 tie score Tuesday in nonleague action. The Seahawks’ first score came on a goal by Madi White with an assist to Kaci Montoya, and their second was an own goal score.

The Sunset League race starts up Thursday. Edison hosts Los Alamitos (5 p.m.), Fountain Valley goes to Newport Harbor (5 p.m.), and defending champ Huntington Beach is home to Marina (5 p.m.).

Next Tuesday, Ocean View kicks off its Golden West League campaign with a 3:15 p.m. game at Santa Ana.

Girls’ Water Polo

In its first game of the New Year, Huntington Beach defeated visiting Santa Margarita Monday, 13-10, outscoring the Eagles, 7-4, in the second half of the nonleague matchup to get the win. Kalista Hyham led the way for the Oilers with four goals and four assists. Julia Rozolis-Hill (assist) had three goals, Nicca Falah (assist) two goals, and Marina Hyham recorded nine saves.

The Sunset League season began Wednesday and scores from the three openers weren’t available at press time. In league games next Wednesday at Newport Harbor High, Huntington takes on Newport Harbor (5 p.m.), Edison battles Marina (6:05 p.m.), and Fountain Valley faces Los Alamitos (7:10 p.m.).

Ocean View , which hosts Los Amigos in a 3 p.m. nonleague game Thursday, launches its Golden West League schedule at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Santa Ana.
