The Sunset League boys’ volleyball season got underway Friday and defending champion Huntington Beach and Edison both picked up victories.

Huntington was a 25-21, 25-19, 25-13 winner over visiting Marina. Senior middle blocker Shane Holdaway had nine kills, senior outside hitter Sean Morrissey eight kills, and junior outside hitter Noah Franklin six kills for the Oilers.

The victory put Huntington, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, at 17-0, and put its national-record winning streak at 121 consecutive matches.

“It’s always good to get the first league win,” Huntington Coach Craig Pazanti said. “This is the start of our ‘second’ season, and the beginning of our run to try to capture the Sunset League title. It was also good to have some other guys contribute, who don’t always get a chance.”

At Edison, the Chargers got past Los Alamitos in five sets, 25-23, 14-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11. The win improved the Chargers’ overall record to 8-4 and avenged a March 19 loss to the Griffins in the Division 1 semifinals of the Orange County Championships.

“We showed our depth in this match,” Edison Coach Matt Skolnik said. “Our bench came in strong and role players stepped up when we needed points. This was a good win against a very good team.”

In the third league match Friday, Newport Harbor swept visiting Fountain Valley, 25-15, 25-17, 25-18.

The Sunset League schedule resumes next Tuesday with Edison traveling to Marina, Fountain Valley visiting Los Alamitos, and top-ranked Huntington Beach hosting Newport Harbor.
