The Huntington Beach Pee Wee Division Green Chargers rolled up over 370 yards in total offense and opened up their 2015 Pop Warner Football season in big fashion by defeating the San Clemente Red Tritons, 36-6, Saturday at San Clemente High.

Led by quarterback Elijah Brown, who completed 12 of 17 passes for 292 yards, and receiver Anthony Robinson, (four receptions, 173 yards, three touchdowns), the Green Chargers cruised to victory. Robinson caught his three touchdown passes in the opening half. He had a 34-yarder in the first quarter, and a 53 and 63-yard scoring plays in the second half, the latter coming just before halftime.

The rest of Huntington’s receiving corps included Ethan Ton with three receptions and a touchdown, Ryan Rivituso (45 yards), Nico Brown (24 yards), and Skylar Thompson and Shane Dzwlieski (one reception each). The offensive line of Johnny Figueroa, Will Burke, Liam Kennedy, Michael Kelly and John Gentiella had an outstanding game and protecting Brown while opening up holes for running backs Gabe Hoelzel, Tristan Copeland and Philip Overturf. Hoelzel lead the team in rushing with 53 yards and a touchdown.

A stingy Huntington defense was led by the line of Tyler Moses, Eric Hernandez, Hudson Letterman, Lukas Jones and Vincent Maza. The defense and special team forced two fumbles recovered by Nico Brown and Ton.

On special teams, Rivituso converted three, two-point conversion kicks, and Copeland blocked a two-point kick attempt by the Red Tritons.

Girls’ Soccer

The HB Slammers Futbol Club Under-16 girls’ team won its division championship of the Players Cup Tournament Sunday at Capistrano Valley High.

HB Slammers defeated teams from Los Angeles (LA Premier FC), Temecula Valley (TVFC Hawks) and Irvine (Pateadores FC), and La Mirada, 1-0, in the championship game.

In the title game, HB Slammers kept the pressure up and played tenacious defense, suffocating attacks by La Mirada FC. Head coach Ryan Brown made several changes and substitutions late in the game and when Olivia Espinosa slammed a shot into the net, it gave HB Slammers the winning goal.

The HB Slammers kept the pressure on with Espinosa, Megan Crutsinger, Naomi Wilson, Destiny Rivas and Rachel Roberts constantly on the attack and taking key shots. The midfield was controlled by the passing and seamless transition from defense to offense by Kelly Almanzan, Eva Gomez, Kristin Stevens, Megan Tingle and Karen Lovine. A smothering defense was paced by Anna Brown, Paige Frink, Holly Garrett, Bailey Goetz, Mariah Zermeno and goalie Briana Boykin who recorded several key saves.

HB Slammers surrendered only one goal in the two-day tournament which started Saturday.
