Next up for Edison: Mater Dei

Share

It’s still the month of September but already, three local football teams will be wrapping up nonleague play this week.

Playing their final tune-ups before heading into league action in two weeks are Huntington Beach, Edison and Marina. Ocean View and Brethren Christian both continue on with nonleague play, and Fountain Valley, which is idle this week, has one game remaining before it starts league competition.

Huntington Beach and Marina will play home games, and Edison, Ocean View and Brethren Christian, are on the road.

Thursday

Animo South (0-3) vs. Huntington Beach (1-3)

(7 p.m., Huntington Beach High)

Having twice traveled deep into south Orange County and once to north Los Angeles County in the last three weeks, the Oilers return to Sheue Stadium for some home cooking when they play host to Animo South Los Angeles.

Huntington lost for the third time by dropping another high-scoring affair to Moorpark, this time, by a 41-38 final in double-overtime. Oilers running back Hunter Simmons rushed for 272 yards and a touchdown on 39 carries, threw a 51-yard scoring pass to Jake Adams and also blocked a punt.

Tyler Reihs’ fifth touchdown of the game, a 16-yard run in the second OT, was the difference. Reihs also went over the 200-yard rushing mark with 212 yards.

The score was tied, 28-28, at the end of regulation.

In last year’s game at Huntington, Moorpark rallied late and scored in the final seconds to also win by three points, 52-49.

“It was another great game between two competitive teams, and Hunter [Simmons] played out of his mind,” Huntington Coach Eric Lo said. “He was terrific.

“We’ve been on the road a long time and it’s nice to be playing back at home. As for us, we need to fix some mistakes we’ve been making these past few weeks. We’re missing too many tackles and we haven’t thrown the ball well in our last few games.”

Huntington’s opponent Thursday, Animo South, comes on the heels of road games against San Clemente (tie-No. 1, CIF Southern Section Southwest Division), JSerra (No. 9, PAC-5 Division) and Moorpark.

In their three losses, the Panthers have been outscored, 94-34. Like Huntington, they also are coming off an overtime loss, a 20-14 defeat last week to Playa del Rey St. Bernard.

Friday

Edison (2-2) vs. Mater Dei (4-0)

(7 p.m., Santa Ana Bowl)

The Chargers and Monarchs both complete the nonleague portion of their schedules when they meet for the 16th consecutive year.

Edison is coming off a tense, 21-14 loss to Servite, a Trinity League rival of Mater Dei. The Chargers took a 7-0 lead on its opening possession behind a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Grant Lowary to receiver David Atencio, and regained the lead at 14-13 in the third quarter on a nine-yard run by running back Jacob Marines.

Servite scored the go-head touchdown and two-point conversion with four minutes left, but Edison drove deep into Servite territory before turning the ball over on downs with 38 seconds left after a fourth-down pass was just short of the first-down measurement.

“It’s a tough one to lose,” Edison Coach Dave White said after the game. “We did some good things and went toe-to-toe with them. I’m proud of the kids and proud of the way we played.”

Edison enters Friday’s game ranked ninth in the CIF Southern Section West Valley Division.

Mater Dei has been impressive in its first four games. The Monarchs, ranked third in the CIF-SS PAC-5 Division, have opened their season with wins over highly ranked opponents: La Puente Bishop Amat (24-21), Tesoro (35-14), La Mirada (42-7) and Upland (43-14).

In last week’s win over Upland, freshman quarterback JT Daniels threw for 281 yards and four touchdowns including three to receiver Osiris St. Brown. Running back Brandon LaMarche ran for 146 yards and a score.

“It’s going to be another tough one for us against a Trinity [League] opponent,” White said. “Mater Dei is an excellent football team.”

St. Anthony (1-2) vs. Marina (1-3)

(7 p.m., Huntington Beach High)

The Vikings will be out to end a two-game losing streak when they close out their nonleague schedule against Long Beach St. Anthony.

An already-depleted Marina squad lost two more key starters last Friday in a 51-6 loss to undefeated San Juan Hills. The Vikings touchdown came on an 80-yard pass play between quarterback Anthony De La Torre and receiver Javier Sanchez.

The Vikings lost the services Noah Holmes (broken finger) and Blaine Riederich (shoulder injury) in the first quarter of last week’s loss. They had entered the game without three other injured starters in Cooper Malerstein, Ethan Young and Kyle Tsu.

Marina Coach Jeff Turley said Malerstein and Young suffered concussions in a Sept. 11 game against Westminster game, and Tsu has a broken finger.

Turley said he was to “find out” Wednesday which players will be cleared to play against St. Anthony.

“This week has been all about healing,” he said. “We were missing five guys who have a lot to do with what we do here. It was a bad week to have that happen when you are going up against a team as talented as San Juan Hills. We had some sophomores step in to new roles last week, and we’ll need other kids to step up this week.”

St. Anthony also has dropped its last two games and is coming off a 36-20 loss to San Luis Obispo Mission Prep.

The Saints reached the CIF-SS East Valley Division semifinals last year.

“They have some talent on that team,” Turley said. “They have a couple of really good defensive ends (team captains Logan Gamble, Curtis Weaver) who also play receiver and tight end. It will be an interesting matchup.”

Ocean View (1-2) vs. Bolsa Grande (0-3)

(7 p.m., Bolsa Grande High)

Ocean View got its first victory of the season last week and the Seahawks will attempt to win a second when it travels to face the Matadors.

The Seahawks rode a 21-0 second-quarter advantage over La Quinta to an eventual, 35-23 win. Quarterback Blake Meyer tossed four touchdown passes with two going to Xavier Salgado and one apiece to Dylan Durham and Chase Foreman. Adel Holmes scored the other touchdown on a short run in the second quarter that put Ocean View ahead to stay.

“Friday’s win was a testament to my coaches and players having a great week of practice,” Ocean View Coach Luis Nunez said. “As a staff, we knew we had to keep challenging our kids and my coaches did a great job of preparing our boys. The kids responded and really had a great week of practice.”

The Seahawks now face a winless Bolsa Grande team that has been outscored, 80-8, in its last two games.

The Matadors have scored just 20 points in three games.

“We will continue to coach our tails off as we’ve got two more weeks to get better before league,” Nunez said. “We aren’t that far away from clicking offensively as we got a lot of underclassmen who are starting to settle in.

“We will be ready for Bolsa Grande Friday, and we are looking forward to get back on the field this week to get to work.”

Brethren Christian (4-0) vs. Heritage Christian (2-2)

(7 p.m., Granada Hills High)

Brethren Christian travels to Northridge for a Warriors vs. Warriors matchup at John Elway Stadium.

BC remained undefeated by outscoring Capistrano Valley Christian Saturday, 42-33. The Warriors received several outstanding performances including running back Jordan Leonard who gained 272 yards and scored three touchdowns on 26 carries, and Nathan Sagastume who caught four passes with two going for touchdowns, had key blocks on two touchdown runs, recorded nine tackles on defense, was BC’s long snapper, and had three touchdown-saving tackles after kicks.

BC has climbed to a tie for the No. 3 spot in this week’s CIF-SS East Valley Division rankings.

“We were pushed by a very good offensive team, and conditioning became a factor,” BC Coach Pat McInally said. “We need to pick up our secondary coverage, tackling and overall toughness. But, still a very good win.”

Heritage Christian lost its first two games of the season but has since won two straight by shutout. The Warriors shut down Yermo Silver Valley last week, 45-0, with John Basmajian running for 160 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries to lead a rushing attack that rolled up 328 yards and scored five times.

Bye: Fountain Valley (2-2)

The Barons headed into a bye week on a two-game winning streak. They won for the second time Friday by routing visiting Los Angeles West Adams Prep (0-4), 55-12.

Quarterback Chad Olberding scored four rushing touchdowns and threw a TD pass to running back Moe Falealii. The Barons also scored on a 45-yard reverse pass from Kent Swift to Angel Hernandez, and runs from Garrett Horn and Michael Ober.

Ober, who normally plays at wide receiver, filled in at running back and “had a standout game on offense,” Fountain Valley Coach Ray Fenton said.

The Barons led, 42-0, at halftime.

“It’s nice to have a bye and give the players a break from the physical demands of our sport,” said Fenton, whose Barons opened the season Aug. 28 against Servite. “We’re getting ready for a talented Mira Mesa team.”

Fountain Valley returns to action Oct. 2 when it celebrates its homecoming game. The Barons play host to the Mira Mesa Marauders (CIF-SS San Diego Section) at 7 p.m. at Huntington Beach High.
