HB Pee Wee Green Chargers shut out Orange Red Chiefs

The Huntington Beach Pee Wee Green Chargers came up with a big victory and kept their playoff hopes alive in the process by shutting out the Orange Red Chiefs, 8-0, in Pop Warner Football action Saturday.

After three consecutive losses to three of the top teams in the Orange Empire Conference, the Green Chargers (3-3) were led by their resurging defense which came up with three sacks, two interceptions, numerous quarterback hurries and tackles for losses. Leading the way were Gabe Hoelzel with two sacks, Rex Campbell with one sack and a fumble recovery, and Skylar Thompson and Philip Overturf who each had an interception. The defensive line of Tyler Moses, Hudson Letterman, Lukas Jones and Vincent Maza backed up the solid linebacking corps of Campbell, Overturf, Shane Dzwilewski and Nico Brown, and stuffed the Red Chiefs’ rushing attack. The Green Chargers secondary of Tristan Copeland, Ethan Ton, Elijah Brown, Anthony Robinson and Thompson, shut down the Red Chiefs’ air attack with solid coverage and sure-handed tackling.

Offensively, the Green Chargers did enough to win the game as quarterback Elijah Brown threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Robinson, and Nico Brown converted a two-point kick, just before halftime.

Copeland led the rushing attack with 73 yards on nine carries while Robinson and Nico. Brown led the Green Chargers with three receptions each, gaining 35 and 31 yards, respectively.

Huntington faces a must-win situation Saturday when it takes on the Brea Wildcats at 3 p.m. Saturday at Brea Olinda High. The Wildcats bring a 5-1 record and 28.6 points per game scoring average into the contest.

A victory Saturday by the Green Chargers would earn them a tie-breaker playoff game Monday in Garden Grove.
