Live updates: Dodgers announce Dave Roberts as new manager

The Roberts press conference just wrapped. The last bit of it dealt with his coaching staff and who might be making those decisions. Seems like it will be a team effort on rounding out who may be on the Dodgers bench going forward.

Roberts says he played the game with speed as a way to survive in the Majors. He does believe in team offense, in situational hitting, competing every pitch and running the bases. Watching others compete and run the bases hard and those things impact the whole team.

Roberts is telling a great story about getting a phone call from Vin Scully on his 88th birthday. He let the phone go to voice mail and then heard this iconic voice. He talked about how special it is to get a call from the icon.

Gabe Kapler will stil be part of the organization. Friedman says that Kapler will definitely impact the organization going forward.

Roberts mentions all the Dodgers greats that have come out for the press conference. Don Newcombe, Tommy LaSorda, Maury Wills. Current Dodger Adrian Gonzalez is also in attendance.

Roberts gives a round of thank yous to his family, the Dodgers owners and the front office.

Right-hander Joe Wieland has re-signed with the Dodgers, according to a person familiar with the situation who spoke under the condition of anonymity because the agreement has not been announced.

The Dodgers had just come off another postseason appearance. The management and the manager could not agree on a contract, so the manager left.

The Dodgers had World Series aspirations and a roster packed with star power. The management handed all those egos and all those expectations to a fortysomething manager, one who never had managed a game in the major leagues.

We're not talking about Dave Roberts, who will be introduced Tuesday as the Dodgers' latest manager. We're talking about Walter Alston, whose hiring as Brooklyn Dodgers manager in 1953 generated a "Who?" headline in one New York newspaper and this remark from a sportswriter: "'The Dodgers do not need a manager, and that is why they got Alston."
