Tim Wallach to be on Dodgers’ coaching staff

Tim Wallach, the Dodgers’ highly regarded triple-A manager, has signed a contract to be on the major league coaching staff next year.

Wallach’s role under Manager Don Mattingly has not been determined, according to a baseball source who spoke under the condition of anonymity because the Dodgers haven’t made an announcement.

With Mattingly taking over the managerial post vacated by Joe Torre, the Dodgers coaching staff is expected to undergo some changes.

Bench coach Bob Schaefer said he told Mattingly he would not be back. Being a first-year manager, Mattingly has said he would like someone with managerial experience to be his bench coach. Third base coach Larry Bowa, a former National League manager of the year, figures to be a candidate.

First base coach Mariano Duncan said he was told by management that he could talk to other clubs, indicating he is unlikely to be retained.

Pitching coach Rick Honeycutt is expected to return.

Wallach probably will be the Dodgers’ third base or hitting coach. He held the latter position in 2004 and 2005.

Selected by Baseball America in 2009 as the top managerial prospect in the Pacific Coast League, Wallach was expected to be a candidate for a major league managerial job this winter.
